Gary Mitchell
Gary Mitchell resides in Catawba County, NC and has been making pottery since
1992. His wood fired groundhog kiln and pottery shop are located in Conover,
NC.
He acquired some of his pottery knowledge from Charles Lisk and is grateful
for his help. Gary Mitchell turns pottery on a treadle wheel, uses hand dug
clays, and glazes with old traditional wood fired glazes. He makes traditional
utilitarian wares including face jugs, crocks, churns, jugs, and his favorite,
pickle crocks.
He is one of the featured contemporary potters in Catawba Clay; Contemporary
Southern Face Jug Makers, authored by Barry G. Huffman. Gary Mitchell's
pottery may be purchased at his kiln openings, local pottery festivals, and at
the Catawba Valley Pottery & Antiques Festival in March annually.
