Burlon Craig Pottery Festival

The Burlon Craig Pottery Festival will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Burlon Craig Home Place, 3171 Cat Square Road, Vale. Admission will be $5 for adults; children under 12 will get in free.

More than 50 potters will participate. There also will be antique pottery dealers, pottery demonstrations, food, live music and the Craig kiln will be fired.

Burlon Craig of Vale first learned to make pottery at age 14. He was one of the last of the traditional N.C. potters to work in alkaline glaze and he is credited for having kept alive the traditional methods of production, forms and glazes once prevalent in the Catawba Valley.

Craig continued to make pottery after serving in the Navy during World War II, digging his own river clay from several locations, including a South River Pit once used by Catawba Indians.

His family carries on the Catawba Valley pottery tradition at the home place.
